The Stonewood area consists of all households within the Stonewood Stake boundaries. These boundaries are between 400 South and 800 South, and between State Street and 400 West. Stonewood Stake is divided up into seven units, consisting of five wards and two branches. The wards and branches are subdivided into “blocks”. A block typically includes five to ten homes or apartments. Each of these geographical areas has emergency preparedness leaders assigned to the area. The Block Captain is the emergency preparedness leader for a block.
The specific responsibilities of the block captain are shown in the diagram below, in the lower left-hand corner. In summary, the block captain is to:
- Prior to any emergency, inventory available skills and assets
- In an emergency, they should first take care of their immediate family (or roommate) needs, …
- …then gather and assess the status and needs of all families and individuals living in their “block”, regardless of their affiliation with any faith, race or creed, …
- …then report the status and specific needs of those living in their block to the ward/branch command center
This sequence of responsibilities is carried out in an annual drill at all levels. The purpose of this drill is to provide an opportunity to gather the prerequisite information, for these organizations to interact as though an actual disaster was occurring, and to refine the efficiency and effectiveness of their response. When responding to an actual disaster, rapid response time and focused responder skills are paramount. This is why participation in the annual Orem City drill at all levels, including individual households, is of critical importance.
