Because most emergencies and disasters don’t occur on a predictable schedule, all residents are encouraged to have emergency food storage on hand. If no emergency food is stored, you may have to deal with hunger and malnutrition after a major disaster or a widespread interruption in food supply and/or delivery.
It is recommended to have the following food storage on hand:
- A Three Month supply of food that is part of your normal daily diet. This is useful in case of pandemic or other shelter-in-place scenarios, and also to help you to transition to your longer-term food supply if needed
- A longer term supply of emergency food stored that will be shelf stable for many years
Here are some planning resources to assist in achieving these goals in your household:
A Three-month Food Supply: We are counseled by Church leaders to build a short-term supply of food that is part of your normal, daily diet and that is reasonable for your circumstances. Click HERE to look at some ideas for building up a 3-month supply of everyday food for your family.
A Long-term Food Supply: For longer-term needs, and where permitted, gradually build a supply of food that will last a long time and that you can use to stay alive, such as wheat, white rice, and beans. A portion of these items may be rotated in your three-month supply. Click HERE to look at some ideas for building up a long-term supply of food for your family.
