President Russell M Nelson counseled us in October 2024 General Conference: “Brothers and sisters, now is the time for you and for me to prepare for the Second Coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Now is the time for us to make our discipleship our highest priority. In a world filled with dizzying distractions, how can we do this? Regular worship in the temple will help us. In the house of the Lord, we focus on Jesus Christ. We learn of Him. We make covenants to follow Him. We come to know Him. As we keep our temple covenants, we gain greater access to the Lord’s strengthening power. In the temple, we receive protection from the buffetings of the world. We experience the pure love of Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father in great abundance! We feel peace and spiritual reassurance, in contrast to the turbulence of the world. Here is my promise to you: Every sincere seeker of Jesus Christ will find Him in the temple. You will feel His mercy. You will find answers to your most vexing questions. You will better comprehend the joy of His gospel.”
To truly commune with the Lord as His true disciples, we need to be engaged in His work, which is “bring[ing] to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” (Moses 1:39) In addition to the sacred covenants that we make for ourselves in the temple, there are countless other individuals who are deceased, who yearn for the fulfillment of that promise of eternal life with the Lord. You may volunteer your time and talents in the following ways to assist in finding these deceased individuals, performing their temple ordinances, and raising awareness among the living of the Orem Temple and its role in performing those sacred and saving ordinances.
- Family History Indexing and other volunteer activities are available to members of the Church that wish to assist others in finding their deceased ancestors, so that their temple ordinances can be performed in their behalf. Indexing means to transcribe information from historical documents so that other people can search for their ancestors. Go to this location in familysearch.org and login for more information about these opportunities to serve.
- Family History Research. If you are able to dedicate even short bursts of time researching your family lines in familysearch.org, you can find information about many deceased ancestors and other related kindred who have not had their temple ordinances completed. Once submitted, this information may be used by you, your family or others to perform the saving ordinances of the House of the Lord in behalf of these deceased ancestors. If you are new to family history research, or wish to expand you horizons, you may either use the online learning application, thefhguide.com, or learn from the friendly family history staff in the Stonewood FamilySearch Center in the northeast corner of our Stake Center building (450 South 100 West), which is currently open during the following times (except holidays):
– Sunday 5:30pm – 7:30pm
– Monday 5:30pm – 7:30pm
– Wednesday 10am – 7pm
– Friday 9am – noon - You can make reservations to perform proxy ordinances in the Orem Temple at this location on the Church’s web site. Just click on this link, login to your church account, select the Orem Temple (or any other temple that is open at the date and time you wish to go), then select the type of ordinance you would like to perform and the date on which you would like to serve. If you don’t hold a current temple recommend, and desire to attend the temple to perform proxy ordinances, please make an appointment with your bishop, and indicate your desire to receive (or renew) your temple recommend.
- Ordinance and Office Workers are often needed for the Orem Temple! The Orem Temple is the designated temple for the Stonewood Stake. If you desire to serve in the Orem Temple, please make an appointment with your bishop, and indicate that you would like to serve as either an Ordinance Worker or an Office Worker in the Orem Temple. The requirements for temple service opportunities are generally as follows: Ordinance Workers will eventually need to memorize several ordinances, and the procedures of most of the temple ordinances, and be capable of standing for much of their 4-5 hour shift. Office Workers will need some basic computer skills, and maintain focused attention on detailed temple procedures.
